Merchant 911 Backs AHTCC --- Monday, July 21, 2003

Merchant 911 has issued a formal statement to the Australian High Tech Crime Centre supporting their recently announced initiative against free email address providers.

AHTCC director Alastair MacGibbon is apparently in discussions with Yahoo!, hotmail and others in an effort to foster cooperation between the providers and Australian law enforcement, if not to eliminate the free Email addresses.

Merchant 911 director Tom Mahoney, in an email to the AHTCC, pledged support of the AHTCC efforts and offered to make Merchant 911 resources available.

"Among other things," said Mahoney, "We have a database of over 22,000 of these free Email domains. These things are a major concern to eCommerce merchants due to the anonymity of the users. If they can be eliminated or made less anonymous, we'll do what we can to help."

Merchant 911 Announces New Campaign --- Wednesday, July 16, 2003

Merchant 911 announced today that it is starting a new campaign in it's war against credit card fraud.

"We're going after the web sites that cater to the credit card fraud scene," said Tom Mahoney, Founder and Director of the Organization.

According to Mahoney, the merchant advocate group has shut down a few of these site in the past, but has never made a concentrated effort to put them out of commission. "Now we're going to hit them hard" said Mahoney.

Merchant 911 will continue to monitor the existing sites and watch for others to resurface after they are closed down.

Mahoney says there are many of these sites on the Internet and research indicates that they are all in violation of a legitimate hosting service's Terms of Service. Merchant 911 will notify the sites' hosting services that this activity is going on and let the hosting services take appropriate action. "If they don't," says Mahoney, "We'll make sure the Internet knows the hosting company wasn't responsive to a large organization of on-line merchants from whom the service derives a percentage of their income."

The eCommerce group's URL is http://merchant911.org

Membership screening is strict but all eCommerce merchants are welcome to apply for free access to the member area where tools, links, and other anti-fraud information is available.
