Merchant 911 Celebrates a year --- Friday, December 28, 2001
Merchant 911 has now been in existence for a full year and a very busy and sucessful year it's been!
We have almost 350 members from Apple Computer to Yaasuo Consulting with a lot of banks and card processors in between. They are saying things like:
"Thanks for everything you're doing to help protect us small businesses from credit card fraud!" - Gwen Foss, manager, Books Abound in Michigan
"Being a shell account host, I can safely say 30% of the orders I receive on a daily basis are fraudulent. But thanks to Merchant911, I can definitely say 100% of those fraudulent orders never get processed." - Dan Kulpa, Webscape Communications
We've been written up in ComputerWorld and referenced in a text book, E-COMMERCE: BUSINESS, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY published by Addison-Wesley. Our anti-fraud articles have been published in SearchHound.
Behind the scenes, a searchable database for bad cards and known scammers is being created and a new member management system is being developed.
We've associated ourselves with cardcops.com, the Fraud Defense Network, Fraud Bureau, scambusters.org and the
anti -fraud campaign.
Merchant 911, thanks to the help of a few very dedicated and helpful volunteers, has become a force for the scammers to reckon with. We've managed to shut down two very active card trading groups on the Internet and we continue to monitor several others and pass on the information to our members before it can be used against them.
If you are a merchant and want to avoid credit card fraud, please join us.
If you are one of the dirt bag scammers that think you can use bad cards to purchase goods or services from our members, think again. We know your methods, we are watching you, and if you try it on a member's site, you will be burned.
PayPal under fire --- Monday, December 10, 2001
Merchant 911 has learned that there is a huge number of complaints lodged against PayPal. Comlaints alledge, among other things, the freezing of accounts either for no reason whatsoever or worse, when the account holder becomes a victim of an attempted scam.
According to information received at Merchant 911, a user of their service, PayPal is under investigation by several States Attorneys General offices and possibly federal agencies as well for freezing and confiscating large sums of money from individuals, a large percentage of which do business with PayPal on E-bay.
Complaints against PayPal have become so frequent that web sites such as PayPal Warning and PayPal sucks have flourished. It seems that PayPal is also well known for changing their policies on a regular basis, to suit themselves, with no warning to their account holders.
Merchant 911 will continue to watch this information and post updates here.
