Chargeback Survey Results

When I posted the informal survey on credit card chargebacks last week, I expected to see that on-line merchants were being hit harder than brick and mortar stores. I think we’d all expect that and we were right. The survey was totally unscientific so I don’t know that we can make any firm conclusions, but there’s something interesting here. I didn’t expect “More than 10″ would get a 10% response. I would have to guess that those respondents were high-volume merchants.

The other thing that’s interesting, especially if you’re a Merchant911 member, is that these numbers don’t correlate well with the member demographics. The on-going survey in the member area tells us that 70% of the members are on-line only and do 50 or less transactions per week. A full 75% do all or at least some manual fraud screening. Over 10 chargebacks per year for those folks would be extremely high.

There were a total of 48 responses to each question. Thank you to those that took time from your busy day. Here are the results for whatever they’re worth.
