ATM-Debit Card Breach at Citibank

cardinhand.jpgSPACER.gifAccording to a blog entry at Wired, it looks like a Citibank computer that processes ATM transactions was hacked. Citibank denies it, of course, but they notified the FBI of a hack on February 1st of this year – that’s been documented.

Two men have been arrested in conjunction with that hack and stand accused of withdrawing at least $750,000 in cash withdrawals using debit cards. One of the men has also been implicated in an unrelated crime spree that netted $5 Million in withdrawals.

Court documents are filed, arrests are made and still Citibank denies being hacked. That could be technically correct. Indications are that the information was not taken from a computer, but sucked up in real time as legitimate debit card transactions were being made. Either way, it doesn’t speak well for Citibank.
