More on Bank of New York Mellon

As I reported in my last post, Bank of New York Mellon and their “third party couriers” lost a box of unencrypted backup tapes. Now, according to their own website, there were two incidents of loss. I don’t know how that impacts the initial report of 4.5 million identities at risk, but it probably makes it more.

At the top of the referenced web page is the statement that Protecting the confidentiality and integrity of our clients’ information is one of The Bank of New York Mellon’s highest priorities. Yeah, right. That’s why they sent boxes of unencrypted backup tapes out the door, probably never to be seen again.

To their credit (no pun intended) they have upped the offer to two years of credit monitoring and $25,000 worth of identity theft insurance.

They are still claiming, in bold letters, “there are no indications that the data on the lost tapes has been accessed or misused in any way.” I really wish someone from Bank of New York Mellon would tell me how they know this unless they are already monitoring the credit reports of all 4.5 million affected clients. All they are really saying is that there has been no attempt to misuse the information within New York Mellon. Anything else is pure speculation.
