More Data Pilfered In Transit

According to a recent article in ComputerWorld there’s been another breach of credit card data from a ski resort and the news goes beyond the 46,000 transactions that were compromised.

Bad news for us all

It looks like the bad guys might have found a way to collect credit card data from merchants that are fully compliant with all the security regulations imposed by the card companies. If this is the case, it isn’t good news. I’m sure the security experts will figure out a way to combat or detect this sort of activity, but how many millions of cards will be compromised before we can all get these things in place? Hannaford was forced to replace every server in their chain and that wasn’t cheap.

Only the beginning?

The article also tells us that there is an ongoing investigation of at least 50 other similar incidents in the Northeast alone. The end result of all this could be huge expenses for merchants and the payment industry, all of which will be passed on to the consumer. And once again, consumer confidence will understandably be shaken.
