The IRS Does it Differently

In a recent story in the Houston Chronicle it’s reported that the IRS delivered some computer tapes to City Hall in Kansas City. That was in August of 2006. The tapes were never seen again in spite of an investigation that lasted from December of 2006 until November of 2007.

The IRS is blaming the city for the loss. This may or may not be an accurate assessment of the blame but in either case, the IRS knows what was on the tapes and who’s information it was.

Let there be no mistake; if this were a retailer and lost credit card information, they’d be hung out to dry, and rightfully so. At the very least they’d be scrambling to offer credit monitoring.

But this was the IRS so we have to believe that names, addresses and Social Security Numbers were involved. Full blown identity theft is at risk. According to the news article…

The IRS has never said what was on the tapes, how many taxpayers may have been affected or whether taxpayers would be told of the lost information.

If you live or work in the Kansas City area, you should probably keep an eye on your credit reports and start demanding that the IRS starts communicating.
