More on the Debit Card Hack
Earlier this week I received an envelope from my bank containing a brand new debit card.
I wasn’t sure why I’d gotten it or what account it was attached to. After some digging, I found out that it was a replacement for one I already had. It seems that my card was one of the ones at risk in the latest debit card hack. The bank was actually being proactive and replacing 6,000 cards that they has listed as being at risk.
I sent our local branch manager an email commending the bank on their proactive stand, even though I know that they stand to loose more than I do.
Here’s the interesting part. With all the finger pointing at OfficeMax and WalMart, I can tell you that MY card has never been used at either of those places. On the other hand, my wife has frequently used a debit card at OfficeMax and she has not gotten a replacement.
Perhaps there’s some other retailer involved, but I’ll go with an observation made by Avivah Litan of Gartner Research. She believes that when it all shakes out, it will be a processor, not a retailer, that was hacked.
I’d put money on it.
